This etching is number 1 from Glenn Brown's Layered Portrait (after Urs Graf) (2008) series. Taking drawings by the Swiss Renaissance draughtsman Urs Graf as inspiration, Brown scans and digitally manipulates the images, overlaying a number of them to produce a series of printing plates. The plates are printed in combination to create intricate spectral compositions comprising up to fifteen different source images and layered in black ink.
